Internet Video is fast becoming the pillar content piece and marketing strategy for businesses as consumers worldwide have shifted their consumption patterns in favor of video over text.

It is safe to say that video is no longer a niche form of marketing. In fact, among teenagers, today’s celebrities are no longer Hollywood TV actors but are top YouTube creators. (Variety)

Just look at these video stats from YouTube:

  • Every day people watch hundreds of millions of hours on YouTube and generate billions of views
  • The number of hours people are watching on YouTube each month is up 50% year over year

Last years video statistics report from Cisco said that:

  • Internet video consumption to TV doubled in 2013 and will continue to rise rapidly increasing fourfold by 2018.
  • Globally, IP video traffic will be 79 percent of all consumer Internet traffic in 2018. And the total of all forms of video (TV, video on demand [VoD], Internet, and P2P) will be in the range of 80 to 90 percent of global consumer traffic by 2018.

It even gets better. If people are inclined to watch video over text, it is no surprise that small and big businesses alike are lining up to dominate your viewing experience with Video Ads in 2015.

Yes, there are non-ad streaming services like Netfix, or YouTube’s new announcement to roll out a Subscription service (some estimate for $10 a month), but make no mistake about it:

People are addicted to online video and marketers and agencies will increasingly buy Video Ads (skippable and non-skippable) in 2015 and beyond for Branding, Lead Generation,  launching of New Product Announcements, and Direct Sales.

In Part 1 of our Video Monetization series, we went over the use of Preroll Video Ads, and the use of In-Display Text and Banner Ad formats inside the video. We also showed you the art of placing a Companion Ad somewhere near the video.

Add Retargeting to the mix so you see ads that you are already interested in and/or from sites you have already visited in the past, and you are a sitting duck when your wallet is open.

The opportunity is huge for…SEO’ers, Webmasters, Small Business Owners, Product Launchers looking for hype, video marketing agencies, ppc campaign management companies, and basically anyone with a website business.

The 5 Easy Steps to Making Money with Video Ads:

how to make money with video ads

I can assure you that if you fully grasp these 5 points and implement, you will increase your business.

Step 1: What Are Your Goals? Be Super Targeted

You may be competing against big brands in some niches and so you will want to zero in on your video ad goals.

  • Are you wanting to ‘Get Your Brand Out There?’ If so, create a short 1-3 minute “This is who we are and this is how we help our customers…,” type of video with your logo and contact information inside the video.
  • Are you wanting Lead Generation? If so, then create a highly targeted and short 1-3 minute video based on a keyword that your user is interested in. Create a different video for each keyword.
  • Are you wanting Direct Sales? If so, then create a short 1-3 minute video with that is very keyword specific with an Amazing Offer that one would be crazy to turn down.
  • Do you have an upcoming Product Launch you wish to Promote? If so, then create a short 1-3 minute and highly targeted video on why this launch will make them money.

Know your goals. Be very specific. Do not generalize like the big brands. Make sure you use commercial intent keywords.

Step 2: Create a Targeted Landing Page to Match Your Targeted Goals

Your landing page needs to be highly targeted around your keyword and should contain these 5 elements. All these elements should be “Above the Fold” on your browser screen on desktops. Make your website Mobile Responsive:

  • Must Have a Clear Unique Selling Proposition (USP): This is done by a Captivating Main Headline, with supporting sub-headline.
  • The Visual Hero Shot (images/video showing context of use): Create a product image or video showing your offer. Be highly targeted.
  • The Benefits, Benefits, Benefits of your offering: This is done by a bullet list and summary of benefits.
  • Social Proof (I want what she is having): customer testimonials, social media comments, etc….
  • Your Call-To-Action (CTA): This is done by a Form or Order Button, or Next Step.

landingpagesample

While big brands will often use corporate company pages and their landing pages that has no call to action nor any real goal other than getting brand marketing, make sure as a small business or digital marketer to zero in on your goals and landing pages.

Step 3: Create a Targeted Video, and Make the First 5 Seconds Count

You have literally about 5 seconds to grab the viewers attention. If the ad is not compelling in the first 5 seconds, and targeted to the viewers needs, viewers will bounce off, or skip your ad (if video ad is skippable).

Here are some tips in creating your targeted video ad:

  • Shorter is better. Keep your video 2-3 minutes.
  • Make your video match your goals, keywords, and landing page.
  • Video Testimonials work great for Video Ads.
  • Don’t Sell but Inform and Enlighten. Showcase the Real Value.
  • Preview Videos of Product and What They Get work great. Digital Marketer does this.
  • Use Humor and Controversy with Tactfulness
  • Put your Logo and Company Website URL and Contact Info in Video

There are numerous places where you get a professionally designed video make.

Purchase a $5 Gig. Go to Fiverr.com and search for a video testimonial or commercial.

People will do amazing stuff for you.

Step 4: Promote your Video Using Video Ads On These Sites to Start:

There are other places where you can place your video ads, such as Yahoo Video or AOL, but I would start with the Facebook and Youtube who get the most traffic to start.

For example, to do a YouTube video ad, you simply upload your video that you had created to YouTube. Then, you go into your Google Adwords account and create an ad campaign, and select online video. Choose your YouTube video. What is cool is that can target other people’s YouTube videos (called Placement target inside Adwords) to place your preroll video ad.

With Facebook, they have retargeting methods that are simply incredible. Study this topic on Facebook and you are sure to win.

Step 5: Analyze and Split Test Your Campaigns

Like everything, Video Ads need to be monitored, analyzed, and split tested to increase results. Split test different videos. Split test different landing pages. Split test headines, images, call to actions. Test and refine and your results will improve.

Video Marketing Monetization Methods have exploded through the roof.

Do a Google search and you see Adwords ads everywhere. The same is true for YouTube. You click the play button, and what do you see? A preroll Ad. Or, after 10-15 seconds a banner ad pops up. There is another banner Ad to the right of the video, and more textual ads above the Related videos section. And this is only a YouTube video page. Then there are home page Ads, Channel Ads, etc, etc….

There are two terms you need to be familiar with:

  • YouTube Publishers – Publishers are those who upload videos, create channels, playlists, and content.
  • YouTube Advertizers – Advertizers are those who pay to place Ads on YouTube (through Google Adwords).

Video publishers/creators are monetizing their YouTube space (your channel, playlists, and videos) with advertizing ad placements. This blog post will go over the nuts and bolts of YouTube Ads on how to make money on YouTube.

No doubt you may be saying to yourself, “I’m not Lady Gaga on Youtube,” nor “Am I Christina Perry singing ‘I Am Only Human‘ with 58 million views. How am I to make viral videos to get millions of views that are needed to make money on Youtube?” That is a very good question.

People will watch anything. Seriously. Give it a great title. That is the key. A great title will get you attention. After that, it all depends on the video. What kind of video?

It amazes me how videos that are simple, hilarious, outrageous, politically incorrect, borderline r-rated, stupid, and practically insane get the most traffic and viral effect.

Seriously!

Check out a couple of these YouTube success stories:

  • Shane Dawson is a YouTube sensation whose rise to fame was the day that YouTube got him fired. With over 1 billion views  and 6 million subscribers to his Channel he is a YouTube rockstar. He uploads a video to YouTube of him pole dancing and he gets fired by Jenny Craig. Like…seriously? Now, his YouTube Channel Shane Dawson TV gets millions of views on his videos. He has gone on to publish books and iTunes. Ya, I know what you are thinking…’Teenager stuff and r-rated mouth.” His impersonations (such as Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus and Sarah Palin) are big hits.
  • Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg is a Swedish Video Gamer with over 38 million subscribers to his PewDiePie YouTube Channel, and who works through the Video Network “Maker Studios.” This is a huge business and some of these video gamers are raking in the cash with YouTube by doing screen captures of their gaming. Brands such as Electronic Arts, etc.,  are signing up as sponsors with these YouTube publishers and giving them sizable paydays.
  • Natalie Tran is another YouTube sensation for years, and is really one of the early Tuber’s…making it to the 2010 YouTube Rich List. Her Youtube Community Channel continues to gain momentum getting millions of views. Her wikipedia tells us that she even has tried her hand at acting and films as a result.
  • Philip DeFranco, real name Philip Franchini, Jr, is another YouTube money maker with over 3.4 million subscribers and has become a Vlogger Celebrity. He gets news story and gives his opinion about it. That’s about it. This video has 4 million views. Ya, catchy title that will get the clicks. It really discusses the issue of Tuber’s who use images of sexy women as thumbnail pics to get the clicks, etc…(but didn’t he do the same with the title?).

How To Make Money On Youtube

We will be discussing the different ways you can Monetize your videos on Youtube.

1. Become a YouTube Partner. When you verify your account there will be a number of added features and benefits to you. The biggest benefit is that you will be able to put Adwords Advertizers ads on your YouTube videos (ads run on or beside your videos). You make money when visitors watch the preroll video ad for 30 seconds or click on it, or if they click on the overlay banner ad on the bottom of the video (more on this below).

How much money can you make? If an Adwords Advertizer pays $10 per click, you will make 55% of that, and Google (who owns YouTube) makes 45%. As a rule of thumb, for every 1000 views, you can make anywhere from $1.50 to $4.00.

Adsense Income

2. Earn Google Adsense Income By Placing Advertizer Ads on Your Published YouTube Content

I have created this video which shows a number of ways to monetize your videos as a publisher.

How to Make Money On Youtube | Video Monetization

You can monetize your YouTube video content in a number of ways:

A. First, Enable Monetization in your Creator Studio dashboard under Channel/Monetization.

B. Next, Link your Adsense account with your Youtube account.

C. Set Your Default Settings for Upload Monetization – If this is deselected, you can edit each video with Video Manager and monetize individually. You can also bulk edit the monetization of videos by selecting them in your Video Manager and the clicking on the Actions > Monetize tab.

How to Make Money on Youtube

D. Choose Which Ad Formats you want to place on your videos.

They include:

  • Overlay in-video banner and text ads. These type of ads show up after 10-15 seconds into a video and are places in the lower 1/3 of your video.
  • Skippable video ads (preroll). These are video ads that start before your video.
  • Display Ads, or Companion Ads, appear to the right of your video and can be a Banner Ad or Rich Media Video Ad.

Youtube How to Make Money

In the “Charlie Bit My Finger – Again” video, you can see 3 Advertizers: the OverLay In-Video Ad, the Display Banner Ad to the right, and the Promoted Video Ad.

Next Two Points Are Critical

3. Focus on Getting Subscribers. They are the YouTube Holy Grail. Each Subscriber you have gets a notification every time you upload a new video. With a catchy title, you will get a view. The more views you have that keeps them watching your video to the end, the higher your rankings will be in Youtube and Google’s search engine, which in turn gets you more traffic and views.  The more views, the more people see the ads. It is a pure numbers game.

4. Use YouTube to Bring Awareness To Your Brand. People hate sales and marketing videos on YouTube. Direct selling on YouTube is pretty much a waste of time. What does work is using YouTube to bring awareness to your brand and to start a conversational piece to your customers and fans.

Google LibraryI like the imagery that Phil Nottingham of Distilled used at his presentation at MozCon 2014 when he describes YouTube as a library and that “people don’t go to a library with purchase intent. YouTube is great for building brand awareness, starting conversations around your brand and solving problems with customers. YouTube is not good for direct sales and sending traffic to your sites.

It must be mentioned that Phil is speaking about Video Publishers (those who upload videos and create content), and NOT YouTube Advertizers.

To get the most traction to bring awareness to your brand, put your brand name and website URL (that you monetize) in highly viewable positions: channel name, channel header art, logo in videos, description boxes, titles, annotations, cards, etc….

Other Ways How To Make Money On YouTube

5. Signup For Google Adwords and Target Other YouTube Videos to Place Ads for Lead Generation and Brand Recognition

Google Adwords is an incredible service. You only pay if someone clicks on your Ad. If you are using a preroll Video Ad, you only pay if someone watches your video for 30 seconds or longer.

Resources:

While not the main subject of this blog post, if you want to try your hand at Google Adwords and have a budget, there is a lot of money to be made. Just be very careful or your credit card will reach its maximum quickly and you will have nothing to show for it. In other words, you need to know what you are doing. Tread lightly.

6. Buy/Sell the Description Box Section on High View YouTube Videos

Some videos go viral like wildfire. It could be “How Charlie Bit My Finger” with 805 Million views. You can message the owners of these videos and offer to buy space in their description box and put your website URLs and information to your product and/or service. Alternatively, if you have a viral video yourself, you can sell and make money from your description box. This would be a private deal.

7. Make Money on YouTube by Creating Presell Videos (or Open Box Videos) on Affiliate Products with a Link to Your Website

Once again, this is not a great way to make money on Youtube, but if you do proper YouTube SEO on keywords for the product in the title and description box, you can get some organic traffic and views. How many actually click on the link in your description box is minimal for direct sales and affiliate videos. For the most part, YouTuber’s despise these types of videos.

(Important Note) I have been in this business since 2008. I have seen a lot of wso’s, and e-courses that promise you riches by publishing videos on YouTube and selling affiliate products. This is simply a scam and the only one making money is the person trying to get you to buy their wso or ecourse. I agree with Phil Nottingham (see above) that YouTube is great for brand awareness and engaging the customer to solve problems (how to fix, train, etc). It is not good for direct and affiliate selling.

8. Get Sponsors for your YouTube Channel and Videos with Paid Placement Ads

YouTubes Paid Ad Placements program is a lucrative business. In fact, paid placements have been around a long time in Television. I am sure Coca Cola paid American Idol a pretty good sum for this.

Youtube How To Make Money

YouTuber’s have been generating high priced revenue for the longest time and cutting private deals with big brands and sponsors.

Because YouTube was cut out of the revenue stream for Paid Ad Placements between publishers and sponsors, YouTube has recently updated their terms of service. You have to notify them in your Ad monetization settings that your video has a Paid Ad Placement. You also are no longer able to include graphical title cards but text only for paid ad placements.

Youtube Paid Product Placements

I am not really sure how YouTube is able to monitor this for videos that have sponsored ads right inside their videos during production.

The key is finding brands who will sponsor your videos and/or your channel. This is a huge opportunity for local seo’ers who want to add an extra income stream. Find local brands and businesses for YouTube product placements sounds like a great new income stream to me.

9. Create Paid Viewer Content. Users Must Pay To Watch Your Videos and/or Subscribe to Channel

YouTube has a Paid Content Monetization Program that is highly ‘under used.’  Only paying customers who purchase with their Google Wallet can watch your videos and content.

10. Use YouTube’s Fan Funding to Monetize Your Videos

When the Fan Funding Feature is enabled, you can set a custom greeting message where users can support you by donating to your Channel. You can also upload a Thank You message after they have contributed to your Channel.

Thank you for reading my post. I am hopeful that you will put these top 10 how to make money on YouTube strategies to work.

Please comment if you have more ideas on YouTube. Thank you

There is no shortage of SEO Tips, Tricks, and Advice floating around the internet and most of it seeks to dispel some mystical or magic formula to outsmart Google. SEO Software scams are at an all-time high that promise you 1st page Google rankings. Be cautious and understand these 10 SEO tips.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is NOT a mystery and Google itself is our greatest resource and teacher to higher rankings.

First and foremost, let me get to the cold hard truth that…GOOGLE WANTS YOU TO HAVE HIGHER RANKINGS.

YOU Can Get More Traffic and Higher Rankings by Following These Top 10 Google SEO Tips in this report.

Google is your friend, not your foe.

Here are the…

Top 10 Google SEO Tips:

1. Study Google’s Official SEO Starter Guide.

And the best part…It Is Free! (read it)

Google has put out an official free report than gives to you their formula for getting higher rankings in their search engine.

This is the best resource for learning SEO and how to rank on Google. This is an excellent 32 page report that gives to us exactly what is important to Google.

For example:

  • Create Unique, Accurate Page Titles
  • Make Use of the “Description” meta tag
  • Improve the Structure of your URLs

 2. Focus on the Users Experience, not the Search Engine

websearcherAs SEO’ers we are so focused on satisfying the needs of the search engine. This is a wrong approach. Many even write content that is focused on the search engine instead of focused on the needs of the human searchers.

There are two pitfalls when the focus is on the search engine:

  • You are susceptible to the whims and hypes of every Google algorithm change …instead of focusing on sound SEO principles.
  • You are susceptible to be sold on every hyped SEO software product that comes out and be tempted to use manipulative and/or deceptive practices…instead of focusing on sound SEO principles.

Google themselves focus on delivering the best content for their users.

Instead of ‘Search Engine Optimization” it should be renamed to simply “Searcher Optimization.”

It is critically important to be focused on what is best for the human visitor, instead of a mathematical algorithm. For example…if web visitors land on your webpages, and bounce off quickly, they are not having a good visitor experience.

You may have all the proper technical SEO strategies in place but if the user feels your site is non-informative to their search, they will go elsewhere…and quickly.

Webmaster Guidelines is another great resource. Google has handed to you their formula.

Google`s 3 Tiered SEO Formula For Ranking:

https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35769?hl=en#1

Namely:

  • Design and content guidelines, which covers mostly how your website is presented to the human observer (easy navigation, etc.).
  • Technical guidelines covers what is going on under the hood of your website and how it is crawled by Google’s bots (HTTP Header, Robots.txt, etc).
  • Quality guidelines, mostly covers manipulative and deceptive SEO practices.

Any attempt to manipulate Google by using a seo software to create spammy tweets and backlinks schemes will only harm your webpage.

Focus on the Web Searcher by giving them a great user experience on your website using sound SEO principles.

This is what Google is looking for when they rank websites…and so should you.

3. Get Your Website Verified at Google Webmaster Tools For Technical Aspects of SEO.

spider-indexOne of the best ways to see how Google views your website is by verifying your website using Google Webmaster Tool. By doing so it will not get you higher rankings but it will allow you to monitor and see reports on many technical SEO issues, including mobile. By technical SEO, we refer to the ‘under the hood’ or source code of your website.

Use Google Webmasters for Your SEO Strategy – Click Here

Any warning messages from Google about your site (ie, your site is hacked) will show up here.

Verify your website at Google Webmaster Tools.

Watch Video.

There are also some great metrics you can review.

Google Webmaster Tools is all about metrics: what’s getting indexed, what’s getting linked, and what’s getting traffic.

Get started with the links below.

Four important features I want to mention are the following:

  • Make sure to submit your sitemaps to webmaster tools.
  • Evaluate which sites are linking to your site.
  • Monitor Your Top Pages that are getting you the most traffic and optimize for maximum visitor engagement.
  • Make sure Google can access your domain by editing your robots.txt, and submit new content for crawling and remove, or disavow content you do not want to show in the search results. Read: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6065812?rd=1

4. Mobile Friendly Websites Rank Higher (Responsive Design is Best)

Starting April 21, 2015, Google announced that it is making an algorithm change and Mobile Friendly sites will be included as a new and important ranking signal.

Here is a quote from Google:

“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”

Taken from: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.ca/2015/02/finding-more-mobile-friendly-search.html

Let me repeat Google’s Official Notice in that this “…will have a significant impact in our search results.”

Make sure your webpages are optimized for both desktop and mobile devices. Doing so will ensure visitors are having a good experience whether they be on a smart phone, a tablet, or a desktop.

Whenever webmasters look into creating mobile friendly sites, there are two ways to make this happen.

  • The first method is by creating a mobile website on, for example, a .mobi domain and then when someone visits your .com domain on a mobile device it will redirect to the .mobi website. This is done by changing the user-agent.
  • The second method is by having one website for both desktop and mobile devices, but the website uses what is called a ‘Responsive Design.”

Matt Cutts of Google says,

“Whenever you have a site that can work well for regular browsers on the desktop as well as mobile phones, there’s a couple completely valid ways to do it. One is called responsive design, and responsive design just means that the page works totally fine whether you access that URL with a desktop browser or whether you access that URL with a mobile browser. Things will rescale, you know, the page size will be taken into account, and everything works fine. Another way to do it is, depending on the user agent that’s coming, you could do a redirect so that a mobile phone – a mobile smartphone, for example – might get redirected to a mobile dot version of your page, and that’s totally fine as well.”

Important Google Mobile Sites to Help You:

Get Started with Mobile Website Guide:
https://developers.google.com/webmasters/mobile-sites/

Test to see if your website is Mobile Friendly:
https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/

Review the Mobile SEO Guide:
https://developers.google.com/webmasters/mobile-sites/mobile-seo/

Get serious about Mobile SEO, especially since there are important differences in the search results between a desktop and mobile, including:

  • There is LESS room above the fold on a mobile devices search results. There is only 1-2 organic listings above the fold on your smartphone.
  • There are expandable sub links on mobile search results.
  • PPC (Pay Per Click ) has more of an impact on the search results pages. It takes up more room above the fold.
  • There are more Universals, especially images, on mobile search results.
  • There are more local search results on mobile search result pages.
  • Micro Formats (ie, Review ratings, etc) are more important on mobile search results.

One of the more important ranking factors for Mobile SEO is page speed. Fewer pages are indexed if page speed is slow.

When designing your webpages, design for Mobile first. Eliminate any unnecessary code. Minimize image sizes, compress files (CSS, HTML, JS), and make fewer server requests with scripts.

5. Create High Value Content Pages (Content Is King)

Quality content attracts quality sites that will link to you and builds trust with Google.

Gone are the days when you can hire a ghost writer, spin the article into a 1000 articles using a spinner tool, and posting these articles on blogs, web 2.0 properties, article directory sites, etc., with a backlink back to your own domain.

Auto-generated content, spun content, and other spammy content generated schemes will not work and may in fact get your website de-indexed.

Google’s Quality Guidelines gives guidance and methods that must be avoided. Make sure to bookmark This Page which is updated by Google of content methods to avoid.

What about Curated Content?

I remember 2-3 years ago the big buzzword in SEO circles was Curated Content. Another word used for this is ‘stitching.’ This is where you take a small portions of content from other websites and copy/paste it all it together to form one article.

Thus, you take a sentence from one website, a tweet from twitter, a Youtube video, a paragraph from an article directory site, another from a news site, and you put it all together to create an article.

There are software’s that automate this entire Curated Content process.

Matt Cutts of Google explains this method as spam. Click on video below to hear what he has to say:

Here are 5 more important Google SEO Tips when creating unique content to ranking higher in Google:

  • Create Unique & Original Content – Avoiding spammy methods is not enough to getting higher rankings. Google wants you to have ‘original’ and ‘unique’ content and offer users VALUE.
  • Create ‘High Value” Content Pages that others will want to view and link to. It is better to create fewer pages with powerful and unique content than it is to have thousands of pages with low quality content.
  • Articles with 2000+ words rank higher than articles with only a couple of small paragraphs.
  • Hook visitors in immediately or they will bounce off and never return. Make your website visually interesting and organized. Have some graphics but not too much. Write smaller paragraphs.
  • Create Content with multiple rich media formats. Do not only have text format only, but include an images with alt tag, a video with a video sitemap, etc….

6. Use Google’s Keyword Planner Tool for Keyword Research

In point #1 we showed you how Google’s SEO Starter Guide goes over using keywords in your Title, Description, Image Alt tags, and more…. All this On-Page SEO is important.

But how do you come up with the right keywords that users are searching for?

Fortunately, Google offers a lot of help with keyword research where you can get data such as search volume, traffic forecasts, and new keyword ideas.

Go to Google’s FREE Keyword Planner Tool to plan your keyword strategy for your website and content.

Another great place to look for keywords that are relevant to your niche is by simply doing a keyword query and then going to the bottom of the results page.

Here you will find ‘Related Keywords’ given to you by Google.

Top 10 Google SEO Tips

Another great little trick to get great Semantic keywords (related keywords) is to look on the organic search results page, and you will see BOLD keywords. For example, when I do a search for ‘puppy dog training,’ and look for Bold Keywords, you can see that Google made bold ‘Puppy Obedience Training’ as a semantic related keyword.

7. Quality Backlinks is the ‘Holy Grail’ of Higher Rankings

Do not spam the search engines with low quality backlinks.

When I first started doing SEO back in 2007 all it took to get top Google ranking was to write an article on your blog, putting your keyword in the title and description tags, and then blasting the search engines with an automated software that would spin your article and post to article directory sites, bookmarking sites, rss feed directories, web 2.0 properties, and PR directories. Not anymore!

Today you need Quality Content (onpage SEO) & Quality Backlinks (offpage SEO).

How to see what sites and linking to you? A couple quick methods:

  • Do an advanced search query using ‘link:yourdomain.com’ to show which sites are linking to you.
  • Google Webmaster Tools will give you a report of all the sites linking to you.

links

In Google’s eyes, a backlink is seen as a ‘vote,’ and the more votes you have, the more popular you become to Google.

Terms such as Domain Popularity and Page Popularity all have to do with how well your website will rank because of the quality and number of its backlinks.

There are 2 important things you can do to make sure that Google only counts quality backlinks and content:

  • If a spam site is linking to you then you want to use Google’s Disavowal Tool to tell Google to disavow it:
  • If you have low quality or auto-generated content on your website that you do not want Google to count, then you can use your robots.txt file to block any webpage. Ideally, you want to promote your high value pages and block your low quality pages from the search engines.

9. Google Counts Social Media Sharing as Ranking Factor

Google see’s social sharing such as that done on Facebook and Twitter as a ranking factor.

Watch Matt Cutts on Youtube.

This is why putting social sharing buttons on your website for visitors to spread your content across social media sites is crucial.

Facebook and Twitter are some of the most visited websites on the internet and Google watches and monitors what is talked about, linked to, and spread on these social media sites.

Make sure to monitor your Social Analytics to find out what pages visitors are most interested in, and then tweak your pages by adding more quality content to boost conversion methods.

Google has announced that HTTPS is a new ranking signal in its SERP algorithm. Adding the “S” at the end of HTTP is a signal to the search engines (and to everyone else) that your website is secure with a 256 bit SSL encryption, and that you have verified its ownership. By adding a SSL Certificate to your website, you can now give your sites a little boost in the SERPs (search engine result pages).

Previously, adding a SSL Certificate and making your website secure with HTTPS was mostly done for those websites that had shopping carts, sensitive financial information, and private customer data, including login information. With adding HTTPS as a ranking signal there will be webmasters and SEO’ers who add a SSL Certificate for SEO and ranking purposes alone.

SSL Certificate

SSL Certificate generated at SEOMaxiHost.com and will add HTTPS and Lock Icon

What is the difference between HTTP and HTTPS?

HTTP is insecure and is subject to man-in-the-middle and eavesdropping attacks, which can let attackers gain access to website accounts [Logins] and sensitive information. HTTPS is designed to withstand such attacks and is considered secure against such attacks¹.

George Mueller, head of GoogleWebmasters, in a recent Google Hangout says, “Right now it is a light signal. We think it is a great idea to move over [to HTTPS], and over time it is something more and more websites will be doing.” He goes on to say that if you are revamping your website, or creating a new one, you want to certainly look at adding https moving forward.

SEOMaxiHost offers SSL Certificates for only $20 and will install the certificate on your domain for you. This alone is worth it, because it is a bit technical if you don’t know what you are doing. If you foresee that you have subdomains, you will want the Wildcard package.

It is important to point out that Google recommends that if you are migrating your URL from http to https that you also notify them inside your Google Webmasters account by submitting a Change of Address. Google also points out that that they are remaking their Change of Address tool, and that if it is not working, doing a simple 301 redirect from http to https will give them notification.

WordPress Users – Migrate HTTP To HTTPS

Inside your wordpress dashboard, go to Settings>General Settings, and change your wordpress url and site url to https. See the sample below:

If you do migrate an existing website from http to https, you need to understand that Google works from a per URL reference point. Thus, if some of your pages show a lock icon and some of your pages do not but give you a warning, this means that your pages that have a warning are not secure with https. This is normally do to the relative URLS inside your page or post. For example, if I have embedded and image onto my website, the URL of this image also needs to be changed to https. Same for videos.

On a typical week I just get a dozen emails on my recommendations for live and online video equipment. This topic is huge and there are many varying opinions and debates, including brand loyalty’s and other biased information. I am no different. The best I have done is researched on my own what is the best on the market at the time of purchase, weigh in the cost versus value factor, and make my decision.

I am upgrading to HD 4K resolution for a number of reasons, not only with my live video equipment but also with my video web players that I have developed. Awesome and cutting edge! Youtube is now supporting it 4k resolution. This is were we need to be. 4K Resolution is another phrase for UHD (Ultra HD).  See below for more in this.

We need to be prepared for where online video is heading. We were all amazed when HD was introduced to online video. Now we are heading for UHD and 4K.

Thus, my video equipment gear list has recently been upgraded this past week. It was a painstakingly stressful process (I hate shopping) intermingled with sheer excitement at the thought of creating awesome live videos with my new equipment.

In the post I will outline my video equipment and software that I personally use:

1. Camera

For the longest time I have used a Sony Camcorder AVCHD. The problem has always been audio. Camera’s have lowsy built-in mics, and if you are at any distance, you will need some type of external mic to capture your voice.

To solve all these issues I researched and my decision came down between two cameras:

I ended up going with the newly released 4K HD Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4.

Youtube now supports 4k resolution and I am updating my MemberPlayer, CovertPlayer Pro, Video Effects Press, and SalesPressPro Premium to be able to do Youtube HD preload in resolution, which is cinematic resolution at its finest. How sweet is that. See can this Youtube image here of settings:

Check out the quality of this Youtube video below in 4K HD resolution filmed using the Lumix GH4 Camera.

—> Click Here To Watch Youtube In HD 4k Resolution

—> Click Here For A Video Background Using VEP Theme

My main reason was that I did not like the bulky size of the Canon, and the Canon also does not have WiiFii. The Panasonic Lumix is smaller in size, richer in features, has WiiFii, is Mirrorless and has 4K Cinematic Video which Youtube now supports. This is a big thing moving forward.

A cool optional is to get the Panasonic DMW-YAGH Pro Audio Video Interface for LUMIX GH4 which gives you the ability to have XLR inputs microphone’s plug directly into your camera. This is on my wishlist. Most DSLR higher end camera’s have a 35mm audio input which is good, but not as great a XLR input.

Lens: Because I am simply using the camera close range videos I picked the f/1.4 lens:

2. Audio Capture & Microphone’s

Nothing is more important than your audio. Most camera’s have lowsy built-in mics, so you need a good external mic to plugin to your camera, or you can record onto an external device and sync your video and audio using video editing software. I do both. Syncing is a hassle if you want to be quick, but in the end has better quality because you can do a lot of manual filtering.

Here is my Audio Gear List:

Accessories:

3. Lighting and Green Screen Backgrounds

Proper lighting is crucial for your live videos. Shooting indoors will require you to have proper lighting. Additionally, with most video editing softwares, like Camtasia 8 by Techsmith, you can edit out your background and replace it with anything you want. The key is the have a background that is solid and that is nowhere found on your body (or your body will be edited out as well). Green Screen’s are great for this purpose and are relatively inexpensive.

For my purposes I have these in my arsenal:

 4. Video Editing Software & Converters

So there you have it…my gear list. For around $5k you can have a complete set up for the ultimate videos.

Tell me your thoughts for live online videos. What are your favorite pics?

After a small fortune in investment in both time and resources, I am pleased to announce the release on February 5 of a new video analytics application called G.A.M.E., an abbreviation for Google Analytics and Marketing Events.

This application is installed on your server (ie., sub-folder on one of your domains), and once installed it will analyze all of your videos on all of your websites where one of my video players is installed. I am first launching G.A.M.E. using MemberPlayer. This means when you use MemberPlayer to play your web videos, and you have G.A.M.E. installed on your server, you will be able to analyze all of your videos.

The data is a Game Changer. No one in the industry gives the data that G.A.M.E produces. I know, I have looked at them all. Whether you do corporate marketing, video marketing for local businesses, product launches, or video reviews, get ready to take your business to the next level. To take this to the next level, the application also produces a PDF Report…which was no easy task to code…let me tell you.

Click on the Video Below to learn all about it, and the PDF Report Sample.

What makes G.A.M.E. so awesome is that data is only a 15 minute delay from Real Time, and Events are automatically created for you to analyze. Once again, check out the video and pdf for all the data it gives.

We will be launching G.A.M.E. on February 5th.

  • Does your video suck? G.A.M.E will tell you.
  • Where are your viewers clicking Pause and never returning? G.A.M.E will tell you.
  • Are your viewers pausing and fast forwarding an entire section? G.A.M.E. will tell you.
  • What is percentage of people who land on your page actually clicking the Play button? G.A.M.E. will tell you.
  • Is there a heatmap so I can visually see the viewers engagement? G.A.M.E. has heatmaps.
  • What percentage are Mobile viewers? G.A.M.E. will tell you.
  • Can I make money with this by offering this as a service addon to local businesses? G.A.M.E. will make you money.
  • There is so much more….

Get ready for G.A.M.E.

Please write a comment and tell me your thoughts and questions.

Ever watched an embedded Youtube or Vimeo video on a responsive (including mobile) website? Only the left half of the videos show up on the webpage when viewing on a mobile device or if you minimize your browser window.

Watch Video Below for my explanation and also a cool tutorial on how I took a 4:3 ratio video at Youtube (which gives you those black lines on the sides), and added it to MemberPlayer. I also added preloading in HD 720p, using a 4:3 ratio option, and starting at 84 seconds into the video. :) (see the Roller Coaster video below)

By default, Youtube and Vimeo embed code is NOT fluid layout.

Thus, if you place the default Vimeo or Youtube embed/iframe code on a responsive/fluid layout website, you will get a bad viewer experience, especially on a mobile device.

How do you resolve this?

MemberPlayer was built from the ground floor using Responsive and Fluid layout. MemberPlayer includes the ability to play Self Hosted video files in html5 and fluid platform, as well as Youtube and Vimeo Advanced Player options in Fluid Design.

Here are some video demonstrations. Obviously, the video above is using MemberPlayer with a self hosted video url file. It is nicely responsive, and I added a nice shadow border for a cool effect (you can also add a nice shadow border around Youtube and Vimeo).

MemberPlayer  – Youtube 4:3 Ratio HD Fluid Layout

The Youtube video above, using MemberPlayer, is now fully responsive. It plays in 4:3 ratio, thus eliminating the black lines that would occur if you played it in Youtube’s default 16:9 ratio. I also added 720p HD preload, and had the video start at 84 seconds so you can only see the roller coaster. Other options I included are no control bar, no title, and no related videos at end of video.

MemberPlayer  – Youtube 16:9 Ratio HD Fluid Layout

The Youtube video above, using MemberPlayer, plays in 16:9 widescreen ratio. I also added 720p HD preload. Other options I included are no control bar, no title, and no related videos at end of video.

MemberPlayer Demo – Vimeo HD Fluid

The Vimeo video above, using MemberPlayer, is fully responsive and includes options: no title, no byline, no user portrait, no badge.

MemberPlayer – Responsive Grid Style Youtube

The Grid style is also available in Vimeo, and Self Hosted videos. The demo above include options HD preload in 1080p, no title, no related videos, no control bar.

As you can see, MemberPlayer is totally awesome. For the full featured list for Self Hosted, Youtube, and Vimeo, visit the Member Player – Click Here

It was a blessing in disguise. The week of November 11th, 2013, started out being a complete disaster.

I launched MemberPlayer.com and emailed my entire list. Other large affiliates got on board. Major traffic and sales being made.

All of a sudden, in one broad swooping stroke, everything crashed. The Hostgator shared server where 95% of my websites were hosted basically blew up before my eyes, and I could not do a thing about it. What made matters worse was Hostgator’s lack of response for about a week.

Side Note: If you are with Hostgator – run. Hostgator has had so many issues.  Even their Facebook page was full of anxiety stricken customers. They have had change of ownership, database problems with their shared accounts, major Data Centers in Utah going down, and customer service problems that basically puts you on a 30 minute waiting list, only to find out there is no one on the other end when you have waited 30 minutes.

I had to take action…

Quickly, I looked at my options. I already owned a VPS (Virtual Private Server) but at the end of the day, I decided to buy my own Dedicated Server and use my own private linux administrator to set it up and monitor.

In my mind, there are some huge advantages of a dedicated server over VPS or Shared hosting:

  • My websites are now faster. A lot faster.
  • Stability – because you are not sharing your server with anyone else, a dedicated server is much more reliable and stable, and all the resources of that server are for your websites, and no one else.
  • Privacy and Protection – a dedicated server is much more secure. You will not get a virus from some else, as you may do with a shared hosting account, etc…. Also, you are in complete control of its privacy.
  • Customization and Enhancements – because you are in control of the server, you can add and delete any modules you want to customize, protect, and enhance. With a shared or VPS, you are limited by the hosting company of what you can do.
  • Awesome Support – with a shared or vps, support can be slow and minimal. With a dedicated server, I have support via skype and is within a minute.

There are a number of things to consider when configuring and monitoring your dedicated server.

Say goodbye to your shared hoster and never again be at their mercy.

Here is my exact steps:

A. Buy a Dedicated Server at SINGLEHOP

SingleHop Hosting
New CPUS. More RAM. Bigger Drives.
See Dedicated Servers >>

They have the best secure and value from my research. I tried OVH but my hard disks kept failing. Singlehop dedicated servers are top notch and my sites are never down. If some of the packages are sold out, keep checking back..as this constantly changes. I even called them with lots of questions. I purchased the Server Model: Xeon 5520 4×2.26GHz HT TB 8MB Cache. When you click on Order Now…pick the Chicago server location as best. Scroll down to the bottom and choose RAID 10 for an extra $55. This is worth it. If one hard disk fails, you are protected by the others. Your sites will not be down.

So, what do you do next?

There are three steps:

  1. Migration – you need to backup all of your domains at the host you are leaving, and then set up and configure at your dedicated server to import, with all of your scripts and databases intact.
  2. Configuration of your Dedicated Server and Cpanel – It is important that you know what you are doing here (I don’t so I hired someone). You will want to update your server with the best anti virus softwares, security modules, etc…
  3. Monitoring – there are a number of free monitoring services to choose from. But once again, how do you monitor and how to you do a little fix or tweak?

Let us look at these more closely….

1. Migration:

During this process you want to create a full site backup on your hoster server and then transfer to your new server. Once you transfer, you extract he files with proper configuration. Next, you want to configure.

2. Configuring:

Before you configure your new server, you want to check the current server configutarion and install all necessary modules so that your new server and sites will work fine.

I recommend doing the following:

  • install control panel on the server
  • install all necessary modules on your server (PHP, Zend Guard, ionCube PHP Loader, mbstring, xml, json and etc)
  • install Mod Security to protect your site from hackers
  • install CSF firewall cPHulk protection top secure your server.
  • install MySQL Percona instead of a similar MySQL server because MySQL Percona works 5 times faster
  • optimize MySQL Percona for your server
  • install Nginx Web Server as fronted on the server to increase the site speed load
  • optimize Nginx for your server
  • increase and secure /tmp partition so that your scripts can work without issues and hackers cannot upload any suspiciouse files
  • increase HDD performance
  • install Maldet antivirus
  • configure Mail server, install DKIM and SPF

Next, you want to Monitor.

3. Monitoring:

You need to monitor your server. The Nagios monitoring system is awesome. It is allow you in 1 minute to see the issue on the server and fix it as soon as it is possible.

Using this monitor system we are checking the following services:

  • Apache and Nginx web servers
  • MySQL server
  • Current Server Load
  • Server response (Ping)
  • SSH service
  • Disk size (HDD, SWAP and TMP partitions)
  • How much users are on the server
  • RAM
  • RAID (if it is installed)

If you are looking for a qualified linux administrator to help you set up with a Dedicated Server, do the migration for you, configuring and monitoring, feel free to contact me with subject line: Dedicated Server.

Rates are reasonable and negotiable.

If you have any questions, please feel free to write a comment below. I read them all. Thanks, Mark

For those of you who are new to the web video industry, let me get right to the point. Flash video is out. Web developers and software engineers pay little attention to web flash video when creating new web video players, except for having a light weight auto flash fallback, just in case some people have an old browser that does not support HTML5.

HTML5 is in favor, and both website developers and software engineers, together with browser and operating systems combined, are all focused on HTML5 video now and in the future. Sure, next will be HTML6, but we certainly are not going back to Adobe Flash Video. Heck, even Adobe itself is moving aggressively to HTML5 video.

What does this mean for you?

  1. If your video player’s engine is Flash, then you want to carefully consider switching to a HTML5 Video Player with Fluid Design.
  2. There are some players that are HTML5, but still do not support responsive/fluid design, so you want to make sure your video player has both (see Responsive & HTML5 MemberPlayer)

Unfortunately, there are some antique premium video players that are still operating in Flash engine. Included in this is Easy Video Suite and my very own Traffic Player.

Watch this video to see the difference between HTML5 Video vs Flash Video.

Even the huge video sharing sites Youtube and Vimeo are now HTML5 Supported Players. Some of the top premium HTML5 Video Players are my very own MemberPlayer, which I recently developed and launched and open source projects FlowPlayer, JWPlayerKultura, and Video.JS.

How to determine if your web video player is Flash or HTML5? Follow these steps (as shown in my video above):

  1. Install Firefox Add-on – Flash OnOff
  2. Turn Off Flash using the Addon (see video above)
  3. Visit a webpage that has a video and click the play button. If you get a message that says, ‘Must download Adobe Flash Player,’ to watch the video, then you can be certain that it is not HTML5 video. If the video plays, then it is HTML5 video supported.

If your video gets the message like on the one below, like it does when you visit EasyVideoSuite with flash disabled, then you know that it is Flash technology, that is on its way out. You’d think that a player that sells for $300 would at least be HTML5.

evplayer

There are other reasons why you do not want to use a Flash Player engine. Namely…

  • Flash is not supported on Apple devices.
  • Browsers, Google, etc, are all moving rapidly to full html5 video support
  • Flash is heavy in resources. It is heavy on your CPU and consumes a lot of battery.

Not only do you want a HTML5 Player, but you want one that has a Fluid & Responsive Design for mobile devices, like MemberPlayer.

memberplayer-firstframe

Well, how do you know if your video player is fluid with responsive design?

Good question. This one is easy. Simply reduce your browser window and you will find out a few things:

  • If your website is fluid design, it will also reduce or expand as your browser has different sizes. FireFox has a Web Developer Responsive Design view if you go to Firefox> Web Development > Responsive Design View.
  • If your video is NOT responsive design, the video will stick out and will not reduce or expand with your browser window in different responsive design views. If your video IS responsive & fluid design, it will reduce or expand with your webpage view in different sizes.
  • My Covert Player is HTML5, but it is NOT responsive design except for single video option. I build this player when responsive design was in its infancy. I added responsive design to it after-the-fact, and to single video only. It took me a long time to add this feature to single video, but did so for my customers.  Hence, single video is responsive design, but not the CNN style, playlist styles, etc.. With MemberPlayer, it is Fluid Design from the ground up from start to finish, with all playing styles included.

If there are any questions at all, please feel free to make a comment below, and please share my page on social media.

Thank you, Mark
